The HIPAA Security Standards final rule was published in the Federal Register on February 20th, 2003. This rule went into effect on April 21st, 2005.
The rule contains general requirements for healthcare provider information systems. These requirements pertain to access controls, information network protection, and information authentication requirements. According to HIPAA rule, security standards relates to the software controls and protocols that are responsible for processing and storing protected data. These areas include: • Entity authentication mechanisms to ensure the identification of the entity, such as passwords, biometrics, PINs, modem callbacks and automatic logoffs • Access controls to protect against any reasonably anticipated threats or hazards to the security or integrity of the information and unauthorized uses or disclosures of the information • Audit controls that provide for the recording and examining of system and security activities to provide a means of identifying suspicious activity • Data authentication mechanisms to ensure that data within an organization has not been altered or destroyed in an unauthorized manner SECURITY FEATURESHIPAA Security Standards are incorporated throughout the digitalAGENCY and digitalCLINIC Systems. Administrators can identify which users are logged on and what applications they are using. System-wide audit trails that automatically document user IDs that are responsible for specific consumer record updates TRANSMISSION SECURITY Protects data using standards-based encryption technologies (SSL/TLS). Users get secure access to applications and data via the Internet INFORMATION ACCESS MANAGEMENT Access authorization - Enables IT administrators to give users personalized access to data based on logon identity. Users see only the data that they are allowed to access WEB SERVICES SECURITY Provides security when exchanging XML messages. Users will securely exchange XML documents leveraging authentication and encryption policies.
